Focus Session With an App Blocker — Earn Screen Time, Then Work

Build a focus session on Android with an earn screen time app—gate social apps, fund a wallet with a short workout or walk, then spend unlock packs only on planned breaks.

A focus session fails when the phone stays unlocked beside the notebook. Timers beep; you dismiss them. What sticks for many adults is a focus block that costs movement: social apps stay gated until you fund a screen time wallet, then breaks use unlock packs you already earned—not open-ended scrolling between tasks.

RepLock on Android is built for that rhythm. You choose the impulse apps, enable Accessibility-based overlay gating, earn minutes with a short pose workout or step walk, then spend packs only when a break is intentional. This guide is a session workflow—setup how-to and empty-wallet recovery live elsewhere; here the job is one clean study or deep-work block.

Why focus modes without an earn cost fade

Category feedback keeps describing the same afternoon: Focus mode on, notifications quiet, then one “quick check” that becomes a feed. Digital Wellbeing charts explain the wreckage later. A PIN lock feels like punishment and gets disabled. People ask for a focus mode app blocker that still lets them take a planned break without pretending willpower alone will hold.

An earn-screen-time loop adds a budget. The overlay pauses the open; the wallet shows what the break costs. You are not banning leisure forever—you are scheduling it after movement.

Three anxieties show up in the same stories:

  • “I need a break but I disappear for an hour” — unbounded opens kill the session.
  • “Blocking everything makes me quit by noon” — overblocking turns focus into a trap.
  • “I start strong then skip the workout” — earn has to be short enough to finish before the block.

Product truth: freemium caps how many apps and exercises you get before Pro. A narrow list and a tiny earn are features of a session that survives Tuesday.

Step 1 — Define the session window and the gated list

Pick a real block: 45–90 minutes of study, writing, or deep work. Write the end time. Then gate only the apps that steal that window—usually short-form video and social feeds. Leave maps, banking, and work chat alone unless those are your failure mode.

Day-one ranking help lives in Which apps to block first. For a focus session, one or two gates beat a half-launcher list.

Confirm protection is on and the overlay fires when you open a gated app. Overlay gating is adult self-control, not Device Owner parental lockdown or VPN web filtering.

Step 2 — Pre-earn a small wallet before you sit down

Do the earn before the hard work starts. A five-minute walk or a short pose set (push-ups, squats, plank—availability depends on free vs Pro) credits Today’s wallet. Camera counting needs framing and light; it is not form coaching or injury prevention.

Pre-earning removes the worst mid-session excuse: “I cannot stop to do push-ups now.” The minutes are already there for a planned break. Walk-first paths are covered in Walk for screen time. Full loop setup sits in Earn screen time wallet how-to.

Step 3 — Work with the gate closed; break with a tiny pack

During the session, leave gated apps closed. When a break is due, open the app on purpose, spend a 5-minute unlock pack, and set a mental end. A 20-minute pack mid-focus usually ends the session.

Spend-on-use matters: the wallet should move when you unlock, not drain because a background timer claimed you were “still on a break.” Fair pack habits are in Unlock pack screen time habits.

If the wallet hits zero mid-afternoon and anger rises, pause—do not rage-disable Accessibility. Short recovery steps are in Empty screen time wallet next steps.

Step 4 — Close the session without a binge coda

When the block ends, decide deliberately: another earn for evening leisure, or leave the gate up and stay offline. The failure mode is “I finished the essay, so I earned infinite scrolling.” You finished the work; you did not empty the honesty of the wallet.

Pro can expand apps and exercises later. It will not invent a focus habit if every session ends in a large custom pack.

How we tested this in RepLock

On 2026-07-27, Morrowline Apps ran a 60-minute focus block on the Android Google Play build (com.pushup.screentime.replock). We gated two high-impulse social apps, pre-earned wallet minutes with a short step walk, worked with the overlay confirming blocked opens, then took one 5-minute unlock pack as a scheduled break. After the pack ended, the next open returned to the gate. Idle time on the home screen alone did not spend the remaining balance.

We verified product constraints: Accessibility overlay limits, freemium list caps, unlock packs as spend-on-use, and no absolute parental-lock claims. Outline and draft were editorially assisted; constraints were checked by Morrowline Apps on the date above.

FAQ

Is this the same as Android Digital Wellbeing Focus mode?

Focus mode can silence apps; it does not make you earn the reopen. RepLock adds a wallet you fund with movement, then spend on unlock packs. Charts still help—friction is what keeps the session intact.

How long should the pre-earn be?

Short enough that you will finish it. A brief walk or a small pose set beats an ambitious workout you skip. The goal is a funded break budget, not a second training plan.

What if I need messaging during deep work?

Keep messengers off the gated list for that session. Gate the feeds that hijack attention. Expand later only if a messenger is truly the leak.

Install RepLock from Google Play, pre-earn a small balance, gate one or two impulse apps, and run your next study block with a 5-minute break pack waiting—not an open phone. That is a focus session the wallet can actually defend.
